ABOUT THE ARTIST
David King Reuben (b. London, U.K.) lives and works in New York as a multimedia artist. When he first came to the city he gained prominence almost immediately in the underground art world, and is known for his expressive portraits and tableaux. His thought provoking social commentary gained him a loyal audience and willing collaborators. So he set out to create a bohemia of his own design in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. In an empty warehouse space on Berry Street (dubbed “The Madhouse”), Reuben and his cohorts threw a bacchanal every night of the week, resulting in hundreds of paintings, music and wild, improvised DIY shows. “We used to keep the door open, because what was anyone going to steal – a painting or a song?” Reuben says. Now, as a more established artist, David keeps the “Madhouse” spirit but has gone from shows in his garage to the most anticipated exhibitions in the city.
