Straddling Asia and Europe, Turkey is home to many lakes as well as the source of numerous rivers. The 455-km long Euphrates (photo) crosses the country before flowing through Syria and Iraq. Along with the Tigris, this majestic river forms the longest river network in Western Asia. Turkey exploits the hydroelectric potential of the Euphrates from its advantageous position upstream. The countryÕs many dams have reduced flow and depleted soils downstream, affecting agricultural yields in Iraq and Syria.
